Our Story

The Kiwanis Club of Little Havana became a reality in 1975 after David Class, then Lt Governor for the Florida District of Kiwanis International, approached Luis Sabines, President of the Latin Chamber of Commerce, to organize a Kiwanis Club in the Latin Community.

Little did they know that his opportunity would lead to the creation of one of the largest and longest running cultural festivals in the US – Calle Ocho – named for the signature street where it is hosted.  The fuel behind this endeavor comes from all of its members, who, as business owners, civic leaders and professional executives, understand the unique needs of their own community.  Their fuel is part compassion, part business savvy, a HUGE load of selflessness, and a strong desire to provide for those less fortunate than themselves, especially in times of need.

As the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana grew and continued to add more fundraising events to their roster – they established The Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation in 1987 with the purpose of expanding their programs and community support. After 45 years of service, this organization is an institution that has supported the community with more than $10,000,000. This is their legacy.
